Lesson 3 - Cropping a Digital Image and the 'Undo' Function

There are times when you can't get as close to a subject as you would like, and even using the zoom lens fails to fill the frame with your subject.

'Cropping' a photograph is the process of changing the outer borders of the image to create a pleasing composition and to maximize the impact of the story being told.

All photo-editing software program provide a tool for cropping images. Most often, the icon used to represent the cropping tool is some version of the icon illustrated to the right.

NOTE: The Cropping Demo also shows you how to "Undo" an editing action. You're probably familiar with Undo functions from other computer programs you have used. If you make an edit that you don't like, or click something by mistake, use Undo to revert to the previous image state. Usually, Undo will let you move back a number of steps. In Photoshop, each edit you make is recorded in the "History Palette." Other editors may call it something else, but the principle is the same.
