Lesson 9 - Sharpening an Image with the Photo-Editor

You can use your photo-editor to enhance the sharpness of a digital photograph. A major misconception, however, is that a photo editor can improve the sharpness of a image not properly focused when the photo was originally taken. Sharpening with a photo-editor means enhancing the definition of the edge boundaries between colors. But the edges must be there to enhance. Out-of-focus pictures do not have identifiable color edge boundaries upon which the editor can act.

Sharpening can add sparkle to an image, but be careful not to over-sharpen. These three example shots of Grandma illustrate the the point.
