To prove the point, I set up a little 'Bell, Book and Candle' still life to show you what I mean. Not a very compelling image, to be sure, but look what I discovered.
The shot on the left was taken holding the camera in my hands. The one on the right was taken using the mini-tripod and the camera's self-timer. They both look about the same at first glance. But if we take a closer look we can see a big difference.

I arranged the still-life on the dining room table. Here I'm shooting the hand held image. I've got my elbows planted on the table top to help stabilize the camera. |

In the tripod-held setup, I used an inverted plastic bowl to elevate the camera slightly. Then I used the camera's self-timer to release the shutter to avoid camera movement caused by a button press. |
Set this little tripod on the roof of your car or on a large rock or wall for tack-sharp landscapes. It's especially helpful when shooting in available light and low light situations.
